Some considered "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" as a risky proposition for Capcom. However, it appears as though Capcom's gamble on its flagship survival-horror franchise has finally paid off.

Today, the NPD group released its monthly sales report for the United States for January 2017. It includes the list of the month's best-selling games. They revealed that "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard"  was the best-selling PS4 and Xbox One game last month, and the best-selling video game software overall for January.

"Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" beat out blockbuster games after coming out on top. "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" fell to the No. 2 spot and "Grand Theft Auto 5" earned the third spot. It's obviously an impressive accomplishment because this NPD report only covers January 1-29, giving it only five days on store shelves.

Since its launch a few weeks ago, Capcom has shipped 3 million units of "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" to retailers. If the game can maintain its sales momentum in February, Capcom may be shipping more units before the month is out, which should help it meet its sales goal of selling 4 million copies by March 31st.

We may see some new faces in the list of top sellers for February's big games, but it will be more interesting to see Resident Evil 7 is able to continue selling well. Capcom is aggressively supporting the game with paid content and has plans to release expansion packs, so perhaps this game will stay on the tracks and be competitive as ever.
