People who played computer games back in the 1990s are likely to be familiar with the mysterious 3D adventure puzzle game called "Myst." Well, believe it or not, Disney almost turned Disney World's Discovery Island into a Myst theme park.

Rand Miller, one of the game developers, told AV Club during an interview, that Disneys' plan to create a real-world version of Myst Island was not a rumor.

"Basically, there was a place down in Florida-it's one of the island areas that they had that wasn't used very much. But it had some walkways among trees, and an island area, and we went down and looked at it and walked around it, and it was incredibly Myst-like. It was perfect for Myst," Miller said.

Sadly, Miller said that the idea turned into dust.

But why did Disney think of the idea in the first place?

According to Slash Film, Disney planned to create the Myst fantasy land to provide its guests with a different type of attraction. Theme park exit surveys had revealed that guests were starting to become dissatisfied with having to wait an hour just to experience a three-minute ride. So Disney decided to give its guests something more exciting and worthwhile.

No one, even Miller, seems to understand why the project never happened. The idea was good, the plans were great, but Disney just lost the interest. Miller said the idea just did not fit Disney's "bigger scheme of things." However, there are rumors that the company did not push through because they did not want to deal with the construction nightmare.

Analysts believe that considering how complicated Myst was, the construction on the small site would have been a logistical horror. It would have also cost Disney a lot of money.

The Abandoned Discovery Island

Walt Disney purchased the Discovery Island back in 1965. The company had planned to turn it into an attraction like the "Tom Sawyer Island."

Unfortunately, the Island closed down sometime in 1998, and it remains off-limits to visitors up to this day. Some people, who have illegally explored the Island, claim that the vicinity remains untouched by the company except for a Pirate Ship that was removed.

A video clip about the Discovery Island can be seen below.

Meanwhile, Legendary Pictures has expressed interest in turning Myst into a television series. Miller said he does not know the intricacies in Hollywood, but he hopes that it would not be abandoned just like the theme park.
