The benefits of donating blood are often overlooked by most people. That is why blood donation is rarely considered as an important activity both on a personal and societal level.

Regular blood donation helps you avoid iron overload in the body, which could lead to  hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis is a health condition caused by excess absorption of iron by the body.

Apart from reducing the risk of hemochromatosis, donating blood regularly may also have anti-cancer benefits. By means of such process, iron stores in the body are maintained at high level. And a high level of iron has been linked with low risk of cancer.

If you are seeking to lose weight, then you should think of donating blood. It has been helpful among obese individuals to do such noble act. However, if you are still challenged by your weight, you should first consult your doctor before donating blood. Your physician might have some words of advice concerning your plan of blood donation.

One of the highly sought benefits of donating blood would be a healthier heart and liver. Blood donation decreases the risks of heart and liver disease, which are sometimes caused by too much iron content in the body.

As of the current writing, it is estimated that in the United States alone, about 38 percent of the population can donate blood. However, less than 10 percent of those people are doing so.

The summer months are the highly suggested period for individuals to donate their blood. The external communications manager of Northern New England Blood Services Region, Mary Brant,  explained the reason behind.

"While the need for blood remains constant throughout the summer, the Red Cross experiences a drastic decline in new donors, and current donors often delay giving due to summer vacation plans. Those who have never given blood before and current donors are needed to donate blood or platelets this summer to help sustain a sufficient community blood supply," Catching Health quoted Ms. Brant as saying.
