Eating too many sweets particularly those foods rich in sugar is never a good habit to have. Apart from developing diabetes, too much sugar also affects others part of your body.

Perhaps the commonly affected part of the body when you eat sugary foods would be your teeth. Parents were not lying when they said that eating candy can rot your teeth, for bacteria that causes cavities love to eat sugar lingering in your mouth.

Apart from your teeth, the joints of your body are also affected by too much sugar. Eating excessive sweets has been shown to aggravate joint pains because of the inflammation it brings. Additionally, a study also revealed that sugar consumption might increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Since sugar intake increases the risk for inflammation, your skin may also age faster. Sugar helps create an advanced glycation end products or "AGEs," which causes skin aging. It damages collagen and elastin in your skin, resulting in wrinkles and saggy skin.

The extra insulin in your blood brought by excess sugar intake may also affect your heart. In particular, excessive sugar consumption may impact the arteries and other parts of the circulatory system.

When your heart experiences additional stress due to the abnormal growth of artery walls, heart disease may manifest. This may include but not limited to heart attacks, and strokes.

Aside from the heart being affected by sugar, the pancreas may also be affected by it. When too much sugar content is in the body, the pancreas may overwork itself to pump out more insulin. This will then give rise to sugar level, increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

If you cannot avoid taking sweet foods, it would be best to substitute other materials to that of sugar. Raw honey, for example, has been proven to be a natural sweetener.

Many studies suggested the health benefits of honey consumption instead of sugar. It serves as great antioxidants and antimicrobial because of its unique contents. Therefore making it a good alternative to sugar.
