Experts are now more convinced that an asteroid hitting Earth is far more realistic than previously imagined. This update came after the discovery of a wide asteroid that could potential impact Earth's surface.

A new branch of Taurids meteor stream has been discovered by experts recently, which could pose a threat to humanity. The known new threat for asteroid collision has been associated with asteroids possibly passing through Earth measuring up to 1,000 feet wide.

This new finding of experts has been drawn from the study of 144 large meteors from the Taurids. This meteor stream appears in the Earth's skies twice a year, causing some showers or light display twice a year.

The Taurid meteoroid stream produces at least four showers over the Earth. Two are active from the end of September until the beginning of December, while the remaining two are active from the end of May to the middle of July, according to RT.

As of the current writing, there is still no data to quantify the risk of the newly discovered branch. However, experts are convinced that such newly discovered new branch is a real source of potentially hazardous objects.

"A systematic search for asteroids within the newly identified branch will be needed to find the size-frequency distribution of large bodies within the branch. The impact risk increases during the encounters of the Earth with the branch," Newsweek quoted study author Jiří Borovička as saying.

Experts suggest that it is important to study further the newly discovered branch to determined the chances of an asteroid hitting Earth. In a case of an asteroid impact occurring, experts hinted that with such massive size a significant regional or even continental damage is to be expected.

In view of the given facts, space agencies worldwide are on an active lookout for potential asteroid threat. NASA together with other international space agencies has previously launched its own project to prevent such catastrophe from happening.
