Intel Core i9 vs. AMD Threadripper CPU wars continue with a new leak suggesting a huge surprise from Intel. An 18-core, 36-thread CPU is underway, which serves as an answer to the recently introduced 16-core, 32-thread CPU by AMD.

Recent reports online suggest that desktop processor consumers are in for another surprise as Intel is said to introduce its Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition, according to Windows Central. Initial specs suggest that the said device will sport 18-core, 36-thread, which is believed to offer a teraflop of computing power.

The said CPU is built on the updated version of the Skylake platform known in the market as Skylake X. This powerful CPU will be the flagship product of Intel in the new Core X series, which rival AMD's Threadripper.

The new series is expected to improve Turbo Boost, with Turbo Boost Max 3.0. This would then translate into a 15% faster single-threaded performance, and 10% multi-threaded performance increase.

Intel Core i9 vs. AMD Threadripper is an interesting competition which will surely benefit consumers. The said CPU war will likely expand the options of consumers from performance and budget wise perspective.

For the Threadripper lineup, a range of 10, 12, 14 and 16-core desktop processors are to be expected, according to Forbes. On the other hand, the Core i9 series will feature a 10-core, 12-core, 14-core, 16-core, and even the Extreme Edition of 18-core CPU.

Although the number of cores and its promising performance would be quite enticing for most consumers, the price point of the said processors will still make a significant impact to purchasing decision of an individual. While Intel Core i9 series is promising in terms of performance, its value will likely impede consumers from a buying the said device. A recent update suggests that the Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition with 18-core/36-thread CPU will be retailed this year for $1,999.
