The latest "Allo" feature is not similar to Snapchat's Bitmoji which only offers customization. According to Life Hacker, Google's version makes use of machine learning in coordination with neural networks. The upgrade maps facial features from the user's selfie photo and transforms it into an animated versions.

The upgrade analyzes the pixels of the user's selfie image. It shall then determine attribute values, algorithmically, via examining pixel values. Color, shape, or texture is measured precisely. The sophisticated process allows "Allo" to create a unique experience for its users.

Googles "Allo" update can transform a selfie into a cartoon within seconds. The user can then enhance and play with his cartoon to make finishing touches. After a little exploring and comparison, the user finishes with 22 custom selfie stickers, all looking nothing less that awesome.

"Allo" still has a long way to go. In the year of its release, it has been downloaded over 10 million times, shy of the 1.2 billion monthly active users of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. By limiting the new selfie turned to customizable cartoon upgrade to "Allo", Google is clearly trying to boost the popularity of its very own messaging app.

The technology used by Google to power this feature is currently limited for Android users but an iOS version is surely on its way. And surely, there's no telling what Google is going to throw into the messaging arena next.
