Rotavirus outbreak continues to ravage vast portion the sub-Saharan Africa, leaving thousands dead. That is why foreign governments are looking for a reliable and yet cheaper solution, as the new BRV-PV vaccine.

The viral disease that is responsible for almost 500,000 deaths of children younger than five years old continues be a major problem in the African continent. Many children are dying from severe gastroenteritis or diarrhea due to the lack of proper medication.

Currently, there are two known rotavirus vaccines available. However, they are very expensive and would require elaborate safekeeping. The said vaccines need to be refrigerated, making distribution more difficult for the medical group.

With the efforts of researchers and experts, another vaccine may soon be used for the said deadly virus. Based on a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a heat-stable and a cheaper alternative may soon come in the form the BRV-PV.

"This is a game-changer. We believe that the new vaccine can bring protection against rotavirus to the children who need it most," CBS News quoted Dr. Micaela Serafini, Doctors Without Borders' medical director as saying.

The cheaper alternative is said to be more reliable than the currently available vaccines for it has been specially adapted for the sub-Saharan African environment. Refrigeration is not needed, making distribution a little bit easier for volunteers.

However, despite the vaccine already been licensed in India, the approval of the World Health Organization is still to be obtained. It is necessary for the United Nations, and other government agencies could purchase the vaccine for mass distribution. After the successful clinical trial, the vaccine is hoped to reach children in Nigeria and across Africa.

Unlike the typical diarrhea outbreak, the rotavirus may not be simply eliminated by improvements in the water system, sanitation, and hygiene. The virus may spread on anything you touch, including food, toys, and utensils, according to Mayo Clinic. Since there are various types of the said virus, it is possible that one may be infected more than once.
