Who says you cannot break up with a friend? As Kanye West once asked, how many of us have real friends? Indeed, we all have friends, but there are times when we hold on to them since it is easier than breaking up and searching for new ones.

The author of "The Friendship Fix" Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., LCP explained some of the reasons why we don't want to break up with a friend. Probably, we prefer to have lame friends than to have none at all, and besides, it's quite awkward.

Dr. Bonior said that breaking up with a friend does not make you a horrible individual. However, you do not need to dump someone because friendships are not monogamous and it is easy to hoard them.

Friends are all over from summer camp, high school, or even Facebook. However, it can be uncomfortable for everyone involved if you try to explain to a person the reason why you no longer want to hang out with him/her, according to MSN.

According to MTV, it may be time for you to clean up your squad if a friend is dragging you down. There are signs which can help you determine when it is time for you to break up with a friend.

If you want to figure out how to handle the situation, you may think about the end goal of the friendship. Maybe, you just want to set some boundaries or to keep in touch on a surface level.

Dr. Bonior said that friends could make you snarky, judgmental, competitive, lazy or materialistic. However, if you cannot see yourself becoming someone you want to be, then you will not meet your goal.
