Eating disorder knows no boundaries as it affects all races and ethnic groups. Former One Direction member Zayn Malik is a living witness of the danger that this disorder may bring to an individual's life.

In the United States alone, there are approximately 30 million people suffering from different forms of eating disorders. The primary concern that experts have is the complications that could arise from this type of disorder.

It was previously believed that this disorder only affects female. However, with Malik's confession has highlighted the fact that males also experience the disorder.

Malik pointed out that his crazy schedule during his time with One Direction and the anxiety he was experiencing led to his eating disorder. After learning to manage his mental health, the singer-songwriter was able to get his health back, according to Huffington Post.

The most common type of disorder associated with an individual's eating habit includes but may not be limited to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating, according to Sutter Health. 

Starvation for example, as manifested by anorexia nervosa, could damage vital organs like the brain and the heart. With the reduced body fat, the body temperature will decrease. With anaemia, swollen joints and reduced muscle may also be observed. 

On the other hand, bulimia nervosa could cause the stomach to rupture. Purging after eating could also result in heart failure due to loss of important vitamins and minerals.

Lastly, binge eating as a form of disorder could lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, and other chronic diseases. That is why it is crucial always to maintain proper physical and mental health. When issues arise relating to an eating disorder, talking to experts and family members.
