Have you ever heard about pink noise? Well, a new study suggests that pink noise might be the new white noise.

White noise is the sound that you consistently hear throughout the night for you to sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, this could be anything from an air purifier, fan, or white noise machine.

Although it is known that white noise is effective in helping you sleep, a new study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience claims that pink noise is better. Pink noise is something which resembles water and sound more naturally, and is balanced compared to white noise, according to Medical Daily.

The study had 13 respondents with an average age of about 75 years old. They slept in a lab for two consecutive nights. On the first night, they listened to pink noise through headphones.

But before they go to bed, they were given a test that they were required to repeat it in the morning. It was found that pink sleep not only enabled the subjects to enjoy deeper sleep, but they have better memory recall.

Senior author Dr. Phyllis Zee told TIME that the effectiveness of pink noise depends on timing. While the respondents were in their slow, deep sleep, the sound was played on their headphones. The participants wore electrode caps to detect brain waves.

The authors of the study said that further research is necessary to determine the effects of using pink noise, in the long run, to improve sleep and boost memory.
