Not every video game has or needs a storyline.  A story, however, can be a big part of a video game.

Games can be a vehicle for storytelling.  The first episode of "The Game Makers: Inside Story" discusses this topic.

The episode is one of ten available of the video series from director Jennie Kong.  Aside from storytelling, other topics covered include narrative design and performance directing.

The full series was launched on Feb. 15.  It features personalities from the gaming industry such as Jade Raymond of the upcoming "Star Wars: Battlefront," Jenova Chen of "Journey," Neil Druckmann of "The Last of Us," Amy Hennig of the "Uncharted" series, and other developers who have worked on games such as "Assassin's Creed," "Metal Gear Solid," "Firewatch," "Ratchet & Clank," and "Until Dawn."

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) produced the series in collaboration with Wonderstruck.  The title and topics of each episode are "Story development," "Writing process," "Character & emotion," "Narrative design," "Structure," "Directing & performance," "Environmental Story," "Virtual & Augmented reality," "Social themes," and "On the future of interactive story."

Kong's documentary series is part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the AIAS.  The academy's annual DICE Conference began on Feb. 21.

The small conference is a significant annual industry event that includes some of the most recognizable names in the gaming industry who gather to discuss the future of video games.

DICE is an acronym for Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain.  The more well-known DICE event is the annual DICE Awards which is the gaming industry's version of Hollywood's Oscar Awards.
