India's Barren Island volcano is active once again, and in fact, has erupted anew following a major eruption in 1991. Since then, the volcano, which located in the remote island of the Asian country, has been observed to have intermittent activity.

The latest eruption was discovered after scientists observed its activity for at least eight hours between Jan. 23 and 26. While doing it, they observed that the volcano was emitting lava and smoke.

It can be noted that India's Barren Island volcano, which is found in Andaman and Nicobar islands, had been dormant for over 150 years until it erupted 26 years ago. Based on records, small eruptions happened thereafter, particularly in 1995 and 2005.

In an interview with CNN, Dr. Abhay Mudholkar, chief scientist at the Goa-based NIO, revealed that "It was a small eruption compared to the last major eruptions in 1991 and 1995."

Explaining that it is dangerous to stay on the island while doing the observation, he said that scientists were about one nautical mile away from India's Barren Island volcano. The team took samples of sediments and water within the area near the erupting volcano.

"We're discussing when to go there again," Mudholkar said, adding that the samples will assist them in doing an extensive study of its volcanic activity.

"On the afternoon of January 23, 2017, the scientific team on board CSIR-NIO's research ship R V Sindhu Sankalp were busy collecting sea floor samples in the Andaman Basin near the Barren volcano when it suddenly started spewing ash," he narrated.

Meanwhile, it was learned that the eruption only happened in "small episodes" which lasted for around five to 10 minutes. With India's Barren Island volcano's recent activity, only ash clouds have been observed during the day and red lava fountains at night.
