Sales of "Grand Theft Auto 4" on Amazon jumped almost 8000 percent for a short period after the announcement that the game is now backward compatible with the Xbox One.  Backward compatibility for "GTA 4" is currently not perfect, however, as there are reports of performance issues with the game on the new console.

The addition of backward compatibility to the features of the Xbox One has given the console a competitive edge over its rival, the PlayStation 4.  The ability to play an existing library of hundreds of games that gamers may already own is a very strong selling point.

The compatibility feature could boost the sales of the Xbox One.  The feature is expected to also increase the sales of old Xbox 360 games that have become compatible with the new console.

This was proven after it was announced that "Grand Theft Auto 4" has been added to the backward compatible library of the Xbox One.  The 2008 crime-oriented open world game developed by Rockstar Games saw a sales rise with a peak increase of nearly 8000 percent on Amazon.

The Movers and Shakers pages on Amazon show the items that have the biggest increase in sales over the past 24 hours. "GTA 4" appeared on the Movers and Shakers page for video games after the announcement of its backward compatibility with the Xbox One.

The sales increase of the game reached as high as 7696 percent.  Its rise in sales tapered off to 4536 percent shortly after that and continued to decline.  Sales of the game have normalized or leveled off since then as it is no longer on the Movers and Shakers page.

This is not the first time that the sales of a game have increased after it was added to the Xbox backward compatibility list. Another Rockstar Games title, "Red Dead Redemption," saw a sales rise of almost 6000 percent after it was announced as backward compatible with the Xbox One.

Although some Xbox 360 games may now be backward compatible with the Xbox One, performance may not be the same.  In some cases, performance on the new console may be better or smoother than on the older system.

In other cases, there may be some performance issues.  This was found to be the case with the "GTA 4."

Gameplay experience of "Grand Theft Auto 4" on the Xbox One feels choppier and more uneven.  There is also noticeable lag in controller response.

A reported analysis of the performance of the Rockstar's open world game revealed that the choppy experience of the game was due to its unlocked frame-rate.  Since backward compatibility for "GTA 4" was only recently rolled out, Microsoft can still make adjustments to resolve concerns over the game.
