President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to overhaul the H-1B work-visa program used to bring elite engineering talents from other countries to work for tech firms in the United States. The move is seen to be primarily targeting immigrants from major Muslim countries. But what is the H-1B Visa hiring tool?

Major tech corporations have denounced Trump's immigration policy. The announcement has sparked major protests across the country, primarily at airports.

The ban, however, will not affect green card holders. Still, tech firms like Microsoft, Apple, Airbnb, Netflix, and Tesla Motors have complained that the new policy will affect their employees' privilege to work legally in the US. Many talents from the major Muslim countries are currently an indispensable part of big tech corporations in the US.

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, about 200 of the company's employees are currently stranded outside the country because of the sudden immigration order. The executive order will change the policies of H-1B visas. Also, other visas issued for temporary agricultural workers, intracompany transfers, and summer students will be affected.

The H1-B visa is designed to let employers from the United States recruit and employ professionals from other countries. With this, the spouse and children of the employee under the age of 21 may accompany the person during his stay in the US for a maximum of six consecutive, which can be further extended in special cases.

The ban is expected to affect areas such as medicine, tech, and engineering. Tech firms in the US normally look out for talents in math and science from foreign countries, usually in Asia, since there is a shortage of such individuals.

President Trump's perspective about immigration has often been criticized as racist. The new law, which is still being drafted, has already dealt a blow to the American economy. Still, the long-term effects are yet to be seen.
