A language firm in London is looking for an Emoji Translator. This is said to be the first such job opening in the world.

A linguist from the United Kingdom said that since emojis became available last year, it has become the country's fastest growing language.

BBC News reported that Today Translations, a language firm in the country, is looking for an Emoji Translator, whose job function would involve compiling monthly trends about the use of such icons and decode how each translates across cultures.

Jurga Zilinskiene, CEO and founder of Today Translations, said that the use of emoji as a language is in fact, a complex subject. He noted that each icon translates differently across cultures.

For instance, in Japan, a white flower might be used by a teacher as a symbol to acknowledge a good student. But in other cultures, the meaning might be lost in translation. In the same sense, an emoji named "face with tears of joy" would translate to "someone laughing so hard that they cry" for Westerners, but Middle Eastern cultures might interpret it as someone "crying and in grief."

"We [Today Translations] are investing time and energy into this is because we believe emoji usage will become more and more popular," Zilinskiene told CNN.

Since the job advertisement was posted online, about 100 applicants have reportedly already shown interest in taking up the job as an Emoji Translator.

Today Translations said that it is taking the vacancy seriously. In a bid to find the most qualified applicant, the company has created an online examination requiring applicants to translate a string of emoji icons into English phrases.

While Today Translations has tagged the remuneration as "competitive," it will be offering the Emoji Translator as a freelance position since the pay structure would depend on the emoji to be translated. However, the company added that the research aspect of the position would be paid by the hour.
