Twitter users worldwide experienced a downtime in their service on Monday morning. The reason for the outage remains unclear. However, many users have linked the outage with an alleged cyber-attack related to the upcoming U.S elections.

It was a little more than 24 hours before Election Day when Twitter users experienced a server outage. Twitter clients on both desktop's and smartphone's, along with TweetDeck, reported that the service was down.

According to The Independent, Twitter servers were down for about half an hour. However, the impacts varied across different users as some tweeted that the system came back after 15 minutes, while others, particularly users from Japan, experienced the problem for many hours longer.

The outage occurred shortly after WikiLeaks took to social media to report about an ongoing denial-of-service attack (DDoS) on its servers. Users were quick to link the outage with the attack even though Twitter has not released an official statement explaining the reason behind the temporary loss of their service.

Because Twitter has always been the preferred social media platform for posting political ideologies, the platform plays an important role during the election season. This is why many users allege that the temporary outage was related to the upcoming U.S elections in some ways.

Twitter is yet to comment on the issue. Business Insider reported that the last major report about a similar outage occurred on October 22, when the platform suffered a DDoS attack, along with large websites such as Spotify, Reddit, and Amazon.
